The Future Arrives: London’s busy streets welcomes its first Robotaxi ride
Not driving a car whilst being sat inside one with no driver is an experience I’ve yet to encounter, but it is something that many SciFi films have been showing for decades. and, finally that Sci Fi moment arrives in London today as Wayve and Uber team up to launch their new autonomous ‘supervised’ robotaxi ride hailing service.
A ‘supervised’ service requires a fully registered and TfL licensed private hire driver to monitor the car from behind the steering wheel as edge cases appear. Whilst not actively driving the car, the driver will act more as a marshal than a driver.
This is a first for the U.K, too, with Wayve beating Waymo and Tesla (plus others) to be the first to offer this service to paying members of the public as it’s robotaxi fleet officially launches today.
For now, the choice car is a Ford Mustang Mach-E, but with that car nearing the end of its production run, Wayve is already looking to Nissan to fit out its software and hardware suite to the all-new LEAF, as it eyes up the Tokyo market next.
Wayve and Nissan’s LEAF
The LEAF would be a good fit for London roads as the car is manufactured in the North East at Nissan’s Sunderland plant, with Wayve headquartered in London where it also built and trained their AI technology on the capital’s challenging roads since 2018.
A Nissan-Wayve collaboration will be a truly British affair at the forefront of breakthrough technology.
Wayve’s “AV2.0” approach utilizes an AI Driver that learns from experience (much like a human) and a full hardware sensor suite comprising of cameras and radar, but no LiDAR, allowing it to scale and adapt to complex environments without relying on traditional HD maps or hand-coded rules. This is not a geofenced project, rather legislation has restricted its use case to London’s streets, albeit its not permitted to be used at airports for now.
Experience
Customers can travel in an all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E with the in-car experience being designed by Uber and features an interactive screen available in 64 languages where riders can start their trip and view the vehicle’s planned path.
Accept your Wayve ride: Customers will have the option to accept or switch to a non-autonomous ride before the car arrives.
Familiar app, new experience: Customers can unlock the doors, and start the trip – all from their Uber app.
Operating area: Customers will be able to travel anywhere within London, apart from airports.
Safety is a top priority: Any autonomous car on the Uber network must meet all of the company’s Safety Guidelines. The initial launch phase features supervised autonomous rides, meaning a trained and TfL licensed private hire driver is onboard to oversee the trip.
Gradual growth: Wayve are starting with a small number of vehicles and will grow over time in-line with rider demand, readiness, and regulation.

Technology
This firmly cements the Uber and Wayve partnership, with Uber providing the customer experience from its technology suite, and access to a large customer base, and Wayve providing the driverless technology. This partnership will expand in 12 Uber markets around the world, beginning with London.
The tie-up between Wayve and Nissan’s LEAF, using NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion, starts in Tokyo later this year.
