👋A Nissan EV for around £19,000?

Mentions of this little car appear in Nissan press releases occasionally. Curiously, they consistently say it will be announced for 2026 production. This is a little odd because Juke has already been announced for 2027. So why do it in this order? I think I know; read on.

There’s been no announcement, but this unnamed A segment - 2.7 to 3.8 metres long - keeps cropping up and today, sneaked into an article about Nissan European sales passing 1.25 million electrified. (includes e-Power hybrids)

Firm details are sparse. We do know its original name was Pixo. Nissan recently trademarked the name, making commentators’ eyebrows flutter. It’s a nameplate we’ve seen before, but the company told a French news outlet they are going to call it Wave. This has been used previously but as a limited-run, luxury trim level on a K11 Micra in the mid-nineties.

The battery will be a 27.5 kWh LFP pack, sourced from CATL, eschewing Nissans usual provider AESC.

Expect approximately 80 part commonality with Twingo. It’s known to be the same length.

Power will come from a Chinese-sourced 63 kW motor that will drive the front axle’s 18-inch wheels.

We often talk about platforms. This will be on CMF-BEV like Micra and Renault 4,5 and Twingo.

Predicted range? About 170 miles.

In keeping with Nissan’s fondness for launching car in a pale blue, we expect this colour to feature prominently.

Design cues from the eighties and nineties “Pike” cars are expected. So think Figaro, Pao and S-Cargo.

Pike was the skunkworks division of Nissan, but the name has since fallen from favour and usage.

The car will benefit from the new faster development time that CEO Ivan Espinosa made part of his inaugural address when he replaced Uchida in the spring of 2025 allowing Wave to effectively overtake Juke on the production line.

We know very little about the interior other than that it has a 10-inch central screen. The mockup you see here features an old steering wheel, so that won’t be on the production cars, but we expect the haptic HVAC controls to carry over from LEAF and ARIYA.

Small cars are making a comeback as EV technology suits their compact dimensions and battery energy density increases.
